Learn the art of taiko drumming at classes offered on Mondays from 8 to 9 p.m. and Thursdays from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. in Clarke Chapel on the Lycoming College campus. Classes are currently scheduled to run throughout the year. No registration is required.
Taiko involves a unique blend of movement and rhythm that strengthens muscles and improves mind and body coordination. Based on concepts similar to martial arts and yoga that discipline the mind and body, its low-impact exercise helps relieve stress and keep the mind sharp.
Courses are taught by Urie Kline, who learned the art of taiko while a student at the University of Pittsburgh. He later studied with and taught for Kenny Endo, a professional player at the vanguard of the taiko genre and who studied drumming techniques in his ancestral Japan for a decade. Kline has taught taiko classes at dozens of music programs throughout the northeast and at many businesses and organizations as a team building activity.
