Students at Lycoming College are already benefiting from the larger, flexible classrooms and laboratories in the new Lynn Science Center, which opened for classes this fall. The three-level, 26,000-square-foot facility also includes a state-of-the-art planetarium, computer labs, faculty offices and atrium.
The building, dedicated at a ceremony on Oct. 3, connects to the existing Heim Biology and Chemistry building to bring all of the science programs at the college under one roof for easier collaboration. Students in other programs will also enjoy the new space, particularly the interdisciplinary projection capabilities of the planetarium.
The building is named after Peter Lynn ’69 and his wife, Joyce, who made the leadership gift for the facility, which will house primarily the physics, geology and astronomy programs.
“What is most exciting and important is the education that will take place within the walls of the building now and in the future,” said Peter Lynn. “The center opens up new educational possibilities that will prepare students to continue to better our society.”
The Lynn Science Center is the first major academic building constructed on campus since the opening of Heim in 1990.
Lycoming President Kent Trachte recognized the Lynn family, the Cleveland family and the First Community Foundation Partnership and many others who contributed to the building. “This building has become a reality because of the generosity of our benefactors, the vision of our board of trustees and former Lycoming President James Douthat, and the dedication of our faculty and many others. It will ensure that Lycoming continues to provide its students with a first-rate science education.”
This new interactive and multi-curricular facility will not only serve Lycoming’s students and faculty, but also benefit the greater Williamsport community as the college is developing learning and discovery programs in collaboration with the area’s school districts.
