Students from Lycoming College’s “Children and Social Studies” education course worked with Brenda Watkins, and her 4th grade class at Curtin Intermediate School, to lead an engaging lesson on important people in history.

Amy Rogers, Ph.D., assistant professor of education, and her students teamed up with Brenda Watkins, and her 4th grade students, to develop questions and research answers regarding important people in history. Once the research was complete, students prepared and gave a presentation to classmates, while dressed as, and personifying their historical figure. After each presentation, students had to guess which historical figure the presenter was personifying.

Each year, students in the “Children and Social Studies” course come together with Watkins’s 4th grade class to complete this project. The education students in Roger’s class not only gain practical experience for their future teaching careers, but also help introduce critical skills, such as conducting research, creative thinking, and evaluating sources, to the elementary students.
