The Lycoming College English Department will continue its Himes/Sweeney Visiting Scholar in Creative Writing series with a reading by novelist Tom Piazza. The event will be held Wednesday, Feb. 25 at 7:30 p.m. in the Mary L. Welch Honors Hall, on the corner of Fourth and Basin streets in Williamsport. This event is free and open to the public.
Piazza is celebrated both as a novelist and as a writer on American music. His eleven books include the novel “City Of Refuge,” the post-Katrina manifesto, “Why New Orleans Matters,” and, most recently, “Devil Sent the Rain: Music and Writing in Desperate America,” a collection of his most recent essays and journalist writings. He was a founding writer of the innovative HBO drama series “TREME,” and the winner of a Grammy Award for his album notes to “Martin Scorsese Presents the Blues: A Musical Journey.” His latest novel, entitled “A Free State,” will be published by HarperCollins this coming fall.
The Himes/Sweeney Visiting Scholar in Creative Writing is an endowed fund created by Lycoming College alumna Diane Sweeney. Income generated from the endowment is used to bring distinguished writers in residence and practitioners to the college to address topics related to creative writing. Its goal is to promote discussion and exploration among students, faculty and the community.
