The Lycoming College Biology Department hosted 75 high school science teachers on campus for the annual Biology Teacher’s Workshop. This year, the teachers rotated through four activities and talks, which presented them with new ideas and methodologies to implement in their classrooms. Karen Avery ‘94, a Montoursville High School Biology Teacher, plays a key role in planning and hosting the workshop.
“Teachers have been enjoying and benefiting from this annual event for almost 25 years now,” said Dr. Edward Gabriel, associate professor of biology. “They walk away with a lot of new ideas for the classroom and fun giveaways!”
The activities include a presentation by Dr. Stephen Nowicki, who will talk about the book that he has written for biology; a presentation from Paul Andersen, of Montana, who will be talking about his teaching approach of using active learning to capture the attention of students in science; a representative from Bio-Rad Corporation who will demonstrate the new things they have available for lab activities; and a demonstration from the Science National Honor Society Students from Montoursville High School who will explain and demonstrate the use of science kits that have been provided by FOTODYNE Corporation.
