Mark Strandquist will speak about his latest exhibit “Windows from Prison,” on Oct. 28 at 4 p.m. in Lycoming College’s Pennington Lounge. This lecture is hosted by the Lycoming College departments of art and criminal justice and criminology, and is free and open to the public. Strandquist’s exhibit will be displayed in Pennington Lounge from Tuesday, Oct. 28 through Friday, Nov. 14.
Prisoners from Washington, District of Columbia that are placed in the federal penitentiary system can be sent to any prison across the country. Strandquist asked these individuals, “If you could have a window in your cell, what place from your past would it look out to?” The prisoners who answered this question had their photo requests fulfilled by students at George Mason University and Duke Ellington High School. Strandquist mailed the photos back to incarcerated participants in prisons across the country. He also took those photos and printed them on 12x9 foot banners, which became the center of interest in his exhibit.
Strandquist is an artist, educator, and faculty member of the Corcoran College of Art and the University of Richmond’s Partners in the Arts. Strandquist targets the topic of mass incarceration in the United States by discussing the bridge of distance between those individuals and their family and friends through photography, visual aesthetics, technical mastery and social interaction.
