In memoriam: Dr. Marshall D. Welch, Jr. 1929-2014

Dr. Marshall D. Welch Jr., 85, of Williamsport, died Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2014, at his home. Dr. Welch is the father of Lycoming College trustee Marshall Welch III.

Born March 18, 1929, in Williamsport, he was a son of Marshall D. and Kathryn (Siegel) Welch Sr. He married Mary (Lindsay) Welch in 1954 and would have celebrated 60 years of marriage on Oct. 9 of this year.

Dr. Welch and his wife Mary Lindsay Welch were married in 1954 and they have been among the College’s most generous philanthropic supporters. Their gifts made possible both the Mary L. Welch Theater and the Mary Lindsay Welch Honors Hall.

Dr. Welch was a graduate of Gettysburg College and received his D.D.S. from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dentistry in 1954. He opened his orthodontic practice in Williamsport in 1958 and for 47 years enthusiastically served the Williamsport and Bloomsburg areas until his retirement in 2005. Dr. Welch was awarded an honorary degree from Lycoming College in 2012.

Surviving in addition to his wife Mary, are three sons, Scott Welch (Joyce), of Cogan Station, Graham L. Welch, of Lancaster, Ohio, and Marshall D. Welch III, of Williamsport; two grandchildren, Abigail and Marshall D. Welch IV; four stepgrandchildren; and seven stepgreat-grandchildren, a sister, Elizabeth (Welch) Brady, of Columbia, Md.; and his loyal dog, Gypsy IV.

A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, at the Clarke Chapel on the campus of Lycoming College 700 College Place, Williamsport. The family will receive friends following the memorial service at the Mary Lindsay Welch Honors Hall on the campus of Lycoming College. Burial will be private in Wildwood Cemetery, Williamsport.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in Dr. Welch's name may be made to the Marshall D. Welch Jr., Fund, through the First Community Foundation, 330 Pine St., Suite 400, Williamsport, PA 17701.
