Lycoming College freshman Maggie Slawson is volunteering at the James V. Brown Library, 19 E. Fourth St., where she creates displays about Pennsylvania’s history in the Rotunda area of the library.
Slawson, a history major from Robinson, changes the displays monthly and researches the topics under the guidance of Christopher Pearl, Ph.D., assistant professor of history at Lycoming.
“My mom helped to build my interest in history at a young age through trivia books,” Slawson said. “The more I read, the more interested I became in the historical scholars, who have influenced me and serve as key inspirational figures in my life.”
Slawson volunteered her time in a similar way in her hometown public library near Pittsburgh prior to coming to Lycoming. She also volunteers at the Lycoming College Archives, where she creates displays based on her research.
“The library welcomes high school and college students who are in need of service hours or who want to get a feel for the job world,” said Allison Savage, volunteer coordinator at the library. “The library is a great place to gain valuable work and service experience. Committed, enthusiastic volunteers help the library maintain the high-level of service our library provides to its patrons.”
