Lycoming College students and faculty recently collaborated with Williamsport’s City Alliance Church to volunteer at the city’s Sojourner Truth Ministries (SJT). Participants served lunch to approximately 70 homeless and underprivileged members of the community.
According to SJT, it has been ministering to the disenfranchised and homeless since 1998. It provides lunch seven days a week while also providing friendship with assistance for any need that may arise. Each Saturday, the non-profit organization partners with a local church to provide a hot lunch to those in need.
Students from the Theatre Department, Beta Phi Gamma and Alpha Sigma Tau sororities, and Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity helped prepare and serve the meal and cleanup.
“It made me happy seeing other people getting the food they need and walking away with a smile,” said Spencer Larson, a senior psychology major. “It was also interesting hearing all their different stories.”
Faculty participant Tiffany Towns, visiting assistant professor of theatre, added, “Students were happy and eager to help us with whatever we asked. The members of City Alliance were so impressed with the generosity of the Lycoming students.”
