The Lycoming College Art Gallery will open its 2013-14 exhibition season with Mark Warwick’s “The Edge” Sept. 12-Oct. 13, in the college’s Art Gallery in Snowden Library. An artists’ reception and gallery talk will be held Thursday, Sept. 12, from 4-5:30 p.m.
As a young artist working in England, Warwick was attracted to the United States by an architecture that was less encumbered – the firm, straight edges that dominated American cityscapes contrasted sharply with the curvilinear decorativeness of Europe.
His recent work is connected to the idea of “Place.” This series of sculptures, drawings and photographs looks at the life of a sculpture from its conception to the physical placement of the work in various contexts. Warwick primarily concentrates on sculpture, creating his abstract forms from metal and stone, using chemical patinas and paint on the surface of the metal. Warwick enjoys an international reputation in monumental sculpture and regularly participates in exhibitions and residencies around the world.
Warwick earned a bachelor’s degree from Wolverhampton Polytechnic, England, and a master’s degree from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred. He is a professor of sculpture at Gettysburg College.
