Artist Phyllis Kornfeld will be sharing insights about her work with incarcerated people during a presentation on Nov. 2 at Lycoming College. Her presentation will be held at 4:30 p.m. in the Mary L. Welch Honors Hall on the corner of Fourth and Basin Streets. The presentation is free and open to the public.
Kornfeld has been working with incarcerated men and women for 33 years in all levels of security around the country. Her teaching inspires them to create sincere and beautiful art that transforms them as they explore their humanness. She then shares their artwork with politicians, lawyers, police, educators and citizens in general to prompt a more compassionate view of those in jail.

Kornfeld has lectured at many colleges and universities across the United States including the Pratt Art Institute, Brown University, Georgetown and Washington Universities, Cornell University, and at a Harvard conference on the education of prisoners. She has also presented at the American Folk Art Museum in New York. She is the author of “Cellblock Visions: Prison Art in America.”
Her students’ art has been exhibited at Bucknell University, Lehigh University, University of Arkansas, Massachusetts College of Art, Acadia University Art Gallery in Nova Scotia, Brenau University, Antioch College, Oklahoma City University, University of Massachusetts, College of Charleston School of the Arts and the Phyllis Kind Gallery in New York.
